Dr. Elinah Russell is originally from Zimbabwe and grew up in South Africa. She has a background in South African non-profit organizations that provide support and counseling to young people. Through this work, she saw the importance of understanding each person’s environment and how it shapes their lived experience. She is a firm believer in intersectionality and its role in how we experience the world. By environment, she means the full context of a person’s life—family, friends, school, work, and more—and how these elements are all connected.
Dr. Russell is a trauma-focused therapist who believes the negative beliefs we hold about ourselves often stem from past trauma. Her therapeutic approach is grounded in Ubuntu and culturally responsive care. “I am because you are” reflects a commitment to connection and mutual care. She believes that to truly connect with others, we must first connect with ourselves.
Fun facts: She has lived in Alaska—yes, Alaska—where she spent two years working as a child and family therapist. She also holds a Doctor of Social Work degree.
